Quade Cooper: International Man of Mystery

In case you are unaware, I have taken the year off to travel the universe and spread the good word of the Cobras. To expose the world to the glory that is the purple vibe, and demonstrate what good old fashioned running rugby combined with a few sneaky lagers is all about.
As The Weatherman already documented, I began my journey in icy Austria where among shredding up the alpine off pieste on my snowboard, I managed to drink a few Jagermeisters. Jeez but the Austrian’s aren’t afraid of a Jagey or two, they even sell them at the check out tills in the supermarkets. So instead of purchasing a harmless Tempo Bar (a boarder’s best friend) before buying your goodies at Woolies, you’re going home with an extensive assortment of miniature spirits and aperitifs. I guess it works out well as Austria is the birth place of Red Bull, and that jolling juice flows like water over there. Needless to say Jaeger Bombs became part of my daily routine.
I managed to lie my way into a job as a chef at a 4 star hotel, after convincing the manager I had worked at Greens (Constantia) as head chef for a year after graduating from Sillwood Cullinary College. Things were going surprisingly swimmingly until my first day on the job when the manager fired me for allegedly shagging the receptionist. Which is fair enough except for the fact that A; she wasn’t hot and B I didn’t even shag her. Eventually things got cleared up, the oke felt like an absolute doos/poes and rehired me. All this on top of the fact that I had to share my staff accommodation with a raging gaylord heroine addict Indonesian man, an alcoholic old German communist midget, and three Slovakian girls; one of which was a full on Nazi and one who was actually quite fetching. I can’t make this shit up.
I did get some good riding in and met some radical people. The Scandinavian’s are a class act, especially the Danish. Denmark definitely gets the Cobras stamp of approval. I if you get some free time off around Christmas I would highly recommend doing a ski season. It’s hectic. One of best times of my life.

After my adventure in Alps I was to reunite with fellow Cobra, Phillip ‘The Drill Sergeant’ Rogers and huge Cobras supporter and general vibing oke; James ‘The Goose’ Goss, in Mallorca Spain. In Austria I became good mates with a legend Ozzie by the name of Shay Kurz aka Shakers, who was an epic sliding partner and even more solid wingman. I convinced him to join us over in Espana. Our POA was to get some work on the yachts in Palma, become super loaded and then live the dream. Maybe even buy our own boat; cruise the med with a few solid 9/10 Spanish bitches while they snarf off our erect penises and then meet up with Vinnie Chase for his Cannes premiere. Alas, this was not to be. Work was slow going on account of the recession, and it seemed that they only wanted to hire chicks. Not ideal.
So I decided to move to Magalluf, affectionately known as “Shaggaluf” by the locals and all that come here. This place is, dare I say, a bit too hectic. The only way I can describe it, is as the Spring Break for the low class chav British youngsters, on tik. Every oke has got a lekka peroxided Mohawk, a nipple ring and numerous kak Chinese symbol/tribal/British flag tattoos covering their bodies. However, the ladies are a slightly different story. While they are still quite scummy, they are in actual fact, hot. Hot in that porn star kind of way. You know; fake tan, big racks, blonde hair. And everyone knows that low class chicks are quite partial to bit of a pomp (that’s why they get preggers when they’re like 15… so sometimes if you’re lucky you can bag yourself a milf who’s till a teenager).
I’ve been working as part of a stage crew. Setting up gigs for The Kooks and Bombay Bicycle Club (ask Gimals about them), last weekend we had Calvin Harris and Tinnie Tempah, and in 2 weeks Dizze rascal is coming over. It’s quite a sweet deal, I get to go backstage and chill with the ous. BUT recently I’ve just landed arguably the greatest job on the island. Basically during the day I chill at this bar on the beach called Mambos, play pool, drink cider and work on my tan and then at night I have to talk to average-to-very-good-looking girls and convince them to come to pool parties. And I get paid for this. It’s quite a lag really. This is place I work for http://www.ibizarocks.com/events/
It’s hot here. Like 34 degrees at 9.30am. The problem is the tap water isn’t drinkable and you’re hammered 5/8’s of the time so you’re permanently dehydrated. Dehydration is a soldier’s worst enemy. Your only option is to order another 1euro pint, this is a fantastical quick fix, however not a long term solution. Pretty soon you’re even more inebriated and dehydrated than before and you find yourself mine sweeping any brightly coloured drink you can, in attempt to get refreshment. It doesn’t help. Next thing you wake up semi-clothed sprwaled on a lounger on the beach, with the sun blazing on your face and some guy shouting at you in Spanish.

All in all the going is good. The food is cheap, the booze is cheaper and I’ve been wiling most of my time away on the beach staring at boobies. I don’t think the Bikini shops here sell bikini tops. Just the bottom half. Like speedos for girls. But more along the lines of a thong. The chicks here don’t cover their cleavage whatsoever. In fact I think covering your nipples on the beach is offensive in Spanish culture. It is glorious. I think I’ve seen every type of boob. Massive ones, perky ones, redonkulously saggy ones, ones with nipples like hubcaps, pierced ones, fake ones, flat ones, etc.. All shapes and sizes. I think I’ve seen more racks in the last month than Hugh Heffner sees in a week. And if you don’t make it to the beach and get your daily dose of “tette”, you can just stroll over to the BCM square where they have a wet t-shirt completion every night. More often than not the dodgy chav chicks will even whip out a bit of box for you.

Everyone keeps asking me what I’m doing here, and why I’m not back home for the South Africa 2010 Fifa World Cup. It’s a good question. And one that I have often asked myself. I must say the vibe back home looked bloody awesome, and I feel proud to be South African. It makes you realize what an amazing and beautiful country we live in, and what diverse, unique and special people we are. So last night I was here ,in Spain, for the final, and to say that this place went off its tits is a lie. It went off its poes (bru)!! The streets where teeming with drunken Spaniards all wearing red, setting off fireworks playing drums and getting verrrrry hectic. I found myself getting very much into the vibe with the locals in the town’s fountain. They definitely aren’t shy of a bit of a celebratory fiesta. And they’ll be going at it all week!

I’ve been following the Cobras progress very closely and I’m fucking impressed with you boys. Every Thursday after I hear about another victory and another chilled fines meeting I absolutely reel. I reel harder than Bakkies reeled after that Jimmy Cowan head butt. The Cobras are one of the things I’ve missed most during my international tour. Being away from it, makes you fully realize what a sick vibe it is. And fuck it is a sick vibe. I’m just wondering who’s won that coveted number 11 jersey? Jeez I hope they have bit of pace and maybe even a step like Qu-Qu-Quade Cooper.

The upcoming golf tour looks set to be one of the highlights of the year, and again I’m gouging out my eyeballs with salad spoons that I can’t be there. I mean a weekend at Wazza’s place in Arnies with the ous, I could think of very few things more spectacular.

Shit there is definitely some stuff I’ve left out, but I’m buggered and I’ve got work tomorrow. I just wanted to wish you lads, the best of luck for the second half the season. Look I know you don’t need luck, The Cobras patented style of visually orgasmic rugby is unstoppable. 2010 is the year of the Cobras. I have a strong feeling we’re going to be lifting the trophy.

Have a sick tour lads. And ask Wazza and The Weatherman for a game of ‘Suicide Darts’ once you get to Arniston.
From me here in Spain…
Oh, so brave…

23 candles

Happy birthday, for yesterday, for our man Ian Army, or to you that have had the (dis) pleasure of jolling with the man, Swarlie. The man celebrated his 23rd bash and if the words around the water cooler are anything to go by, Army started the night and Swarlie ended it, in style!

June birthdays...

A combination of the WC fever, crappy ass exams and pure dam laziness, I have been very slack with the birthday posts of late. Nonetheless our forgotten brothers are not totally forgotten, and a delayed birthday message will have to suffice. So no harm no foul.

And as they say good things take time, right?

So to Na na na nana na na, na na na, Nico... Happy 20th biffday for the 4th of Junie.

And to our jet setting euro buddy Dillon McEvoy, Dillon McEvoy, Happy 23rd birthday for the 7th.

Varsity Cup Koshuis team profile

Team Profile: The Cobras
Tue, 11 May 2010 19:57:00 +0200

The Cobras were formed in 2006 as a social rugby side, looking to play social rugby. However, this was not the case in the end, as the Cobras soon stamped their name all over UCT's Steinhoff Internal League with their brand of fast-paced and aggressive running rugby.

Prioritising fun with mates and the pure enjoyment of rugby rather than winning, the Cobras seem to have found the gelling formula.

Although the emphasis may not be on results, the Cobras have certainly had their fair share of success, making them a much-favoured team in UCT Internal League Rugby.

Whether it be at touch, on the matchday paddock or in the change room for one of their infamous fines sessions, the Cobras are known to give it a full go making the Cobras brand a revered and likeable team! Together with the proud ethos and passionate players, past and present, Cobras rugby is held in high regard.

Since forming in 2006, the Cobras have played 37 matches in the UCT Internal League, lost five and drawn one - so their record speaks for itself.

The highlight of the Cobras' tenure thus far was winning the UCT Internal League title for the first time in 2008 and subsequently qualifying to take part in the inaugural Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Championships the following year. In addition to that, the Cobras had an unbeaten run in the first-ever Cape Town Tens at Hamilton's in 2009, only to lose out to the eventual beer league champions - False Bay - in the semifinals.

The Cobras are a very welcoming 'club' as they are open to anyone who is keen to have fun, make new friends and play some hard rugby. There have been some success stories to come out of Cobras rugby, none other then 2010 UCT captain Nick Fenton-Wells who was a founder member on the Cobras in 2006.

The 2010 season looks set to be a year of endless possibilities for the Cobras. Mindful of the very strong field this year, the Cobras have set their sights firmly on winning the Steinhoff Internal League for the second time in their history.

Consisting of a strong contingent of ex-Bishops pupils, this year's team is fitted with bustling talent.

Players to watch this year are, amongst others, ex-Bishops First XV captain and UCT First XV centre Justin Bijl, along with former UCT first XV flyhalf Oliver Braithwaite. The Cobras are led this year by passionate openside flanker Callan Artus, an ex-UCT Under-20 A1 player himself.

Cobras' players, current and former, are proud of their establishment.

And why not?

Cobra Birthday

A big Happy Birthday goes out to Cobras centre Justin Bijl, at 23 years of age today this man still has many a season left in the purple and white. I'm sure Wednesday will be a true celebration of his Birthday. Happy Birthday Jussie B...

Oh so brave

Player profile # 3

Can anyone say camel t...o...e...

The man hails from hot and humid Zululand and unfortunately believes in 'black and white, nothing else matters', but he is a hard playing Cobra and a solid bloke, so we'll let him by. Player profile this week features none other then experienced back row enforcer Kyle, Kyle Rennie. This is what he had to say (post Stormers vs Sharks this weekend) when Jose caught up with him.

How long have you been apart of the Cobras?

I became a Cobra in the magical year that was 2008.

Cobras till you die?

Cobra till I die and after . . . Make sure my kids are Cobras

Who do you rate is better Kankowski or Spies?

Kankowski, from a great school and plays for a great team

As an ou ballie what’s it like representing the purple and white?

Like it was playing my first game, I still have that same rush and feeling of honour pulling on the purple and white every Wednesday, although the body is starting to disagree with speed of the game.

You support the Sharks. Do you just want to be different or do you genuinely dig supporting a kak team?

I am secretly a huge Stormers fan, but keep that on the hush...But for now 20-14

So you hail from Kokstad? Firstly where the faak is kokstad and give us some highlights of cockstad?

The Stad is nestled in on the border of the transkei and Natal, great part of the country. If you get a map book, I'll show you where it is. Highlights? Besides the best meat in the country, not much but I love it.

What does your Tuesday evening pre match ritual consist of?

Don't do too much prematching, normally just chill out and have a think about what needs to be done on the night. Eat a giant steak or a bowl of spag bol.

Give us some highlights of your Cobras career thus far?

Well there one memory that definitely stands out and that was beating the Nadoes in the 2008 final. Also really enjoyed recieving the cobragator, big moment in my career.

Drink of choice?

Any beer will do but love a vodka and coke when I'm feeling fancy

Where’s your local hangout?

Besides popping into the cottage or having a beer at Forries, the changeroom after the game is my favourite drinking spot for the week.

What u studying at UCT?

Construction Studies, going to be oak who builds your house one day.

Rugby hero?

Marty Holah, born in the wrong generation. If Richie McCaw wasn't around he definitely would of been a great. Otherwise Gary Teichmann

Favourite Cobras chant and or drinking song?

Really enjoy the Cobras Backrow song. Warren's new song sound good, just struggling to remember it.

What do you do to unwind?

Enjoying kicking back, meeting up with a few cobras, having a few coolies, talking some kak here and there.

What do you want to do when you grow up?

Not too concerned about the future yet but as long as I have enough money to own a few Sharks season tickets and be able to come down to the Green Mile and watch the Cobras.

Touch is on...

Touch today at 4pm SHARP regardless of weather...make sure you get down to get your place in match squad.

Three from three!

UCT Cobras were in no joking mood yesterday when they ran circle around an average College House side. Running in 7 unanswered tries the Cobras were simply too good for their opponents who put up very little resistance. After some referee disputes the game finally got underway and was subsequently shortened (who knows what the score could have been if the game went the usual 1 hour).

Despite the rain and battling the customary Green Mile driving wind the Cobras controlled procession from the outset and managed four tries before the half time break. Running the ball from all corners the rejuvenated Cobras looked at no time in danger of losing. Apart from their slick hands and the ensuing try fest, the communication on defence was impressive. Not giving an inch the 2008 champions kept their try line in tack for the second week in a row. Points for 74 and points against 7 thus far in 2010. With the forwards, starting where they left off in the second stanza against the Spanners the previous week, gained their side front foot ball as they executed brilliant control and patients at the break down whilst the backline did the finishing. The Cobras truly are dangerous when they spread the ball wide as last night was no exception. With great hands, brilliant angles run and superb support play the Cobras turned the shortened game turn into a long night for the UCT residence.

Final score 54-0.

As a result the Cobras finish top of their log and are looking on to the next round.

WELCOMED RAIN BRINGS BRILLIANCE IN UCT INTERNAL LEAGUE

Teams in the Steinhoff UCT Internal League braved it out on a cold and wet evening on the green mile. Most teams came out to have fun as there was nothing to play for, others came with one goal, TO WIN no matter what stood in there way.

The Steinhoff Cobras started proceedings on the evening when they smashed a lag lusted College House team. Cobras were by far the dominant force as they made College House defend eighty percent of the match. Cobras out played there opponents in every aspect of the match whether it came to attacks or defence. The Cobras scored seven unanswered tries. Eventually winning the match 54 – 00. The Cobras surely in contention of winning this league with this flawless performance.

Player profile # 2

Palyer profile number 2 brings an all too familiar face to your screen, with none other the the heart and sole of the Cobras brand, ex captain and stalwart Warren Butler. Jose was lucky enough to hall him out of the Vega 'Apple Mac bru' com labs and this is what the man had to say.

Handing over the captaincy arm band this year, was it easy?

After a couple of years with the armband I think it was about the right time to move it along, and with a guy like Fetish taking it over, i'm 100% confident that he is the best man to be in charge...they also say a change is as good as a holiday.

As a Cobra co founder what do you think about the vibe in this year’s camp?

I think it's definitely up there with the best vibe that we have had in our 5 year history. Always great to see some new guys coming through the ranks and the squad has some brilliant characters and decent depth to it. It feels like a tight knit family at the moment and in my view we can only go from strength to strength this year.

What do Wednesday nights on the Green Mile mean to you?

Geez I try not to get too excited about it otherwise it makes the wait for a Wednesday evening even harder, but come Monday I’m raring to go and it’s close to the only thing on my mind during the week. To be able to play a hard game of rugby on a Wednesday evening and have a massive fines afterwards with all your mates really does give my week a far more exciting look to it.

A fishing Sunday or a Cobras touch session?

Although I do enjoy to Gooi Lyn every now and again there is nothing better than running out the booze from the weekend, watching Army trying to play touch while still enjoying his weekend, and Callan’s body just not agreeing with his weekend. It is always entertaining and definitely forms an integral part of my weekend.

Stellies jol or a Cape Town jol?

Tough one, depends on the night or party really. Stellies definitely has a soft spot in my heart but then again Cape Town is one of the best cities in the World, how could one deny that?

How do you carbo load on a Tuesday before internal league Wednesdays?

Look as some may know I’m a rather simple eater, with the benefits of living at home I do get that home cooked meal on a Tuesday evening, so whatever is put in front of me will usual have to do. Although back in the day in the White House one would be very nervous on a Tuesday evening before a big game, with a guy like Phil Rogers behind the stove you never really knew what you were getting yourself into.

What do you do for a bit of ‘me time’?

Nothing too hectic, do enjoy playing a little game where you try your hardest to make yourself as comfortable as possible for an extended period of time. Otherwise kicking back and listening to some music or talking a bit of kak here and there, although I do find kicking a ball pretty therapeutic.

Castle or that Black Label stuff?

Good question…I’m not 100% sure myself. Think it could be a mood thing really, always Black Labels in the morning and Castles in the afternoon. If I were at Forries I would probably go with a Castle, although those Black Label draughts are delicious too…shit I actually don’t know. I’ll have whatever please.

Most of us know that you join some of the Nadoes from time to time for a game of cricket. What the ultimate, a game of gentleman cricki or manly Cobras rugby?

Well Cricket has always been a good enjoyment of mine and it’s a great vibe playing Club Cricket, it’s also the perfect alternative to rugby. I enjoy both equally as much but there is just a little something more appealing to the Green Mile on a Wednesday night than long hot days in the field. Give me a ball and I’ll play.

Who’s your rugby idol?

I think I did every single Afrikaans mondelling at school on Corne Krige, he really is a big favourite of mine, hard as nails. But for brilliance and such composure it must be Dan Carter, that man is too good and someone who I think every flyhalf in the world looks up to. I’m also still a firm believer that Shaun Plaaitjies is going to make the Bokke end of year tour.

You bumped into Hugh Bladen in a bar, what would you do/ say to him?

A big high five, he knows he is hectic.

Storm saam!

Week four preview from UCTRFC

Internal League website preview for last stage of round one...

http://uctrfc.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=41&Itemid=74

Come Wednesday night 10 UCT Internal league teams will be in action finalising group standing in the closing stage of round 1. Teams in their respecting groups still have the chance to qualify for second spot as one point separates 2nd and 3rd placed teams in group1, group2 and group 3.

Spectators should be in for a feasts of rugby action come Wednesday as teams fight for that elusive second spot. Teams ending up 1st and 2nd in their groups get an easier run into round 2 as they will be facing 3rd and 4th placed teams in other groups.

Nadoes are confident of securing that single point needed to cement that number 1 spot in their group but with 2 loses in consecutive games Marquard are out to salvage some points as they have only secured a single point in their 2010 Internal league campaign to date. Panthers and Shebeen boys conclude this group of four as they battle it out for that second spot in the group. Panthers with the advantage after coming from a win will have a tough encounter as the Shebeen boys are no walk in the park.

Group 3 is surely the toughest out of the four groups as Cobras, Magic Lions and Spanners all stand a chance to qualify top of the group. Cobras however hold the advantage as they lead this group with 8 points, Magic Lions on six and Spanners on four. Both teams heading up the mind games to distract each other but is this the key for that success.

Cobras Jose Mourinho was lucky enough to be able to have a little ‘catch up’ with 2010 skipper Callan ‘Fetish’ Artis. ‘After tearing him away from the books in the African Studies section of the UCT library, I managed to convince him to join me at the post grad pub for a beer and a banter. Whether intended or not this is what prevailed’, Jose added.

What’s it like being the captain of the Cobras for 2010?

‘Being Captain of the Cobra's has been nothing but an honor and a dream come true.
The positon comes with alot of responsibility and pressure but with a side like ours I am confident I can lead the boys to glory’.

Can the Cobras finish on top again this year after their first league win in 2008?

‘2010 is definitely going to be a good year for us and I think winning the title is a realistic goal we must set ourselves and work hard to achieve. As long as we get down to Cecil each week with a little desire to win, I see no team that deserves it more than us. It is important that the guys indivually want the trophy and that they realise that each Cobra's victory is a step towards our goal’.

Who’s you rugby idol?

‘I know you want me to say James Dolton or Phil Waugh but actually my rugby idol is Brian O'Driscoll’

Beer or spirits?

‘Beer with the boys and spirits at Tiger’

Tiger or Tin Roof?

‘OOoo trick question. Tiger then Roof’

A wife beater and slops or jeans and loafers?

‘Beater and slops hands down’.

What do you do to relax?

‘Sleep’

What makes up your breakfast on match day?

‘4 eggs, toast, a grapefruit and a pint of strong coffee’

Tell us how you got the name ‘Fetish’?

‘Boarding house nonsense. Dont know how it was actually thought up. :)’

What’s your most successful pick up line?

‘You'll have to do. Lets go’.

What would you do if you didn’t play rugby?

‘I'd watch it’.

Are Poen and Shane really your step brothers?

‘Poen and Shane are not really my stepbrothers although Poen's mom is loose and my dad is single so i wont say it may never happen’.

What do you want to be when you 'grow up'?

'When I grow up I want a beer belly, a fast car and a hot young wife that never gives bat!'

Running rugby at its very best...

Bishops vs. Paul Roos this Saturday 11:30 on the Piley Rees (Bishops)

Get down and support the future Cobras...

Another one down...

The Cobras made it two from two in the 2010 UCT internal league when they defeated a defiant Spanners outfit on Wednesday evening. A characteristically icy and blustery windy Green Mile played host to the sea- saw battle. It was a game of two halves which saw the Cobras struggle to control possession in the first spell as they played with the wind advantage. The Spanners met the Cobras with aggression and often very competitive opposition. With opportunities being missed by both sides, which saw all too many ‘final passes’ not go to hand and, as the strong wind continued to play its spoiling role, neither side seemed to get out of first gear. Moments before the half time break the Cobras managed to score, taking a 5-0 lead into the shed.

The second half was a different affair however, as the Cobras came out more composed, and the change was noticeable. Now playing into the wind, which is never an easy feat, the forwards controlled the break down and the backline turned possession into field advantage. Controlling the breakdown the Cobras managed to starve the Spanners of possession and without the ball they simply could not get on the score board. After sustained pressure the Cobras forwards, who stood up and were accounted for in the second spell, forced their way over the Spanners line for the second time in the game to make the score 10- zip, as it remained till the final whistle.

Cobras unbeaten...

Second win...

The Cobras beat Spanners 10-0 last night to go top of their pool....after a disjointed first half the Cobras managed to pull it together to dominate the 2nd half and get the win.

Week 3: Cobras vs. Spanners

Justin Bijl - this man is hard

The Cobras meet the Spanners in their second encounter of the 2010 Internal League tomorrow evening. The two sides have met twice in their history with both games being played in the Cobras championship 2008 season. The pool stage game in 2008 was won by Cobras with the final score being 26-17. The two sides met again in the league semi-final where the Cobras won 14-0 which took them into the final against the Nadoes. It is a big evening for The Cobras as they look to go top of their pool with a victory.

http://www.uctrfc.co.za/ Week 3 preview:

With Freedom day just a few hours away, teams will surely use the off day to their best advantage as kick off for week 3 is upon us.

Fourteen teams are in action this week on the Green as we are a week away from the end of round one in the Steinhoff UCT Internal league. Teams in Group 2 and 4 now know what is expected to end up 1st and 2nd in their respective groups. In Group 4 the Wild Boys and Turtles have already clinched their group buts it’s now the battle of superiority and who has the BMT to end up tops.

Most teams will be using the extra off day as a practice session to improve their tactics as this is where games will be won or lost come Wednesday night. Teams in action on Wednesday night are Wild boys and Turtles for the top of the Log clash. Other matches see both league favourites Tornadoes and Cobras in action and should be easy wins for both teams. Marquard play’s a strong Panthers team that did well against the Tornadoes.

The exciting start to this year’s league is the cure we needed as this is not a two horse race anymore.

UCTRFC Website round-up...

The Steinhoff UCT Internal league hosted the clash of the week as a star studded Cobras team played against a Star studded Magic Lions team, better known as the MOB (Marquard Old Boys).

The cobras line up consisted of some big names such as Ollie Braithewaite, Dugald MacD Jnr, Ian ‘Army’ Armstrong, Warren Butler and Luke Du Plessis former Springbok Captain Morne Du Plessis’s son.
The MOB had their game plan worked out as they brought their own big guns, with Rob Nichol and brother in arms, pink shorts wearing Big Will Nichol, Blaine Moolman and Xhanti Nesi leading by example.

The match was a fiercely contest event as tackles flew in left, right and centre. Both teams had something to prove to each other on the night. The MOB had the better forwards on the night as this was seen by them dominating the Cobras scrum, but don’t write the Cobras off as their backline were far superior to that of the MOB which made it so much interesting to watch.

The Cobras showed their experience throughout the game, playing the ball from left to right and kicking for territorial advantage, something the MOB didn’t do and it was understandable why. The first try came in the 20th minute of the match with Graham Steen Cobras number 9 pouncing on a MOB mistake to score in the corner, and Warren Butler putting over the conversion. With Cobras in the lead the MOB had to score early, and this they did. Devin Dollery caught the Cobras defence napping and took full advantage to score under the post.

With the score now seven points a piece. The match grew more intense, something had to give and it was the MOB that mad the mistake gifting a penalty to the Cobras. Warren Butler calmly slotted home the penalty and giving his team the lead. Was this the last straw or was there another twist to the tail. The MOB kept attacking wit their forwards and gained a penalty for their efforts. They opted for the Line out; it was a critical error from the MOB’s captain as they lost their lineout.

The Cobras held on for the 10 – 7 win and are now placed second in their group.

First win of the season...

The Cobras played to a hard fought victory in heavy rain last night over Magic Lions. Final score 10-7 to The Cobras. Match report to follow...

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Let's do this...

The time has finally come...

This from the UCTRFC website...

The Steinhoff UCT Internal league had some great games last week and it seems to be heating up as teams can’t afford to drop points during this weeks matches.

Four teams will be playing their first round of matches this week as others are trying to play catch up with the winners of week one. Steinhoff Cobras, League winners in 2008 and third place in 2009, will be looking to get five log points on the board after tomorrows night match against Magic Lions. Magic Lions are the second new inclusion to the Steinhoff UCT Internal league. The Lions will be no walk in the park, their team consists of old Marquard boys and ex Cobra players with Captain Rob Nichol, Vice Captain Xhanti Nesi, Brett Snyders and Big Will Nichol all part of that winning Cobras squad in 2008. So this should surely be the match to watch come Wednesday night.

A Cobra in 2010

Many of you may or may not have noticed the absence of the much anticipated centre by the name of Justin JB Bijl from our past 2 weekends warm up games. After many lucrative offers Bijl decided to sign on the dotted line with the Cobras, for the rest of his life, as he said he simply loves the vibe and the style of running rugby that the Cobras play!

His excuses for going AWOL however were on the first occasion that he was away in Knysna and on the second that he was working for a test, but he assured us (as his contact stipulates) that he had been putting in the hard yards on the training paddock and would be finely tuned and ready for action come next Wednesday night.

Here are a few pictures I managed to pull of JB’s facebook page, evidence of his endeavours over the past few weeks.

Everywhere he goes...

A big happy 23rd birthday to our very own Weatherman who has been travelling around Europe for the last few months fine tuning his Weatherman and Rugby skills, he is sure to bring the French winter back with him this coming Thursday as winter is just around the corner, which means only one thing.

It is also good news that he will be available for the better part of The Cobras assault on the 2010 Internal League, having been applying his trade in French Rugby for the last few months he sure has a few new tricks up his sleeve.

We look forward to having him back within the Cobras just in time for the new season...

First win of the season...

The Cobras played to a hard fought victory on Monday evening against a up for it Wild Boys outfit.

The Cobras ran in 6 tries in a wind ridden game at Bishops which saw the boys in purple and white run away with a 30-15 win in their first pre-season friendly.

Pre-season friendly

The Cobras will be in action for the first time in 2010 when they take on The Wild Boys this coming Monday the 5th at 4pm at Bishops.

The Wild Boys former manager, Mr Stuart Black (all to familiar in the Cobras circles), says that 'his' boys are keen and raring to go after some heavy off season recruiting. Little do they know that The Cobras have made some big name signings during the off season themselves and the men have been putting in the hard yards on the training pitch.

There will be a few newly blooded Cobras come Monday afternoon after this 'unofficial' fixture.

Cobras vs The Wild Boys 4pm Monday the 5th on the Cemetery field.

Update - Graham Gooch Festival.

As you may have read the Cobras had a side in this prestigious Stellenbosch based cricket tournament.

Cobras managed to get through to the semi's to play last years winners The Presidents IX. Somehow El Presidente managed to wangle 96 after the allotted 6 overs (there is still some doubt about the scoring). Cobras, unfortunately didn't manage to get all the way there, despite a huge effort from Waz B and Ollie. Congrats to them.

The Graham Gooch Cricket Festival 2010

The Cobras are putting together their first ever Cricket side to compete in a 7-a-side cricket festival this coming Sunday which is being held at Van Der Stal in Stellenbosch (first game at 9am)

The team is perfectly balanced with some old veterans of the game, mixed with some real gutsy and ambitious individuals who will do whatever is required of them to make sure that The Cobras Cricket Team bring home the first piece of silverwear for 2010.

Although not much will be said or revealed about who is exactly in the side at this stage, one can expect a quality and well oiled unit that will be travelling out to Stellenbosch on Saturday to get used to the conditions and the heat before the cricket begins the next day.

The Cobras cricket team will be staying in Stellenbosch until Monday evening to watch UCT vs. Maties in the Varsity Cup final, hopefully resulting in two tropheys being brought back to Cape Town on Tuesday morning.

Get out to Stellenbosch on Sunday to prepare yourself for the Varisty Cup Final on Monday, come down to the cricket, there will be cheap beers etc. and a massive vibe so get down and support The Cobras. You can bring your own drinks too and the Cobras Gazebo will be up for all travelling supporters.

Everywhere you go...

Bonjour mes amis! That's basically french for hello/goodday my friends.

How wonderful. My grasp of french clearly knows no bounds. It's been so long dear readers. Fear not, I have been keeping you in my thoughts where ever I go and in what ever I do. My account of life in france and european sexuality is long and complicated. Filled with many a climax, so to speak. No no no. Not those kinds of climax's. Silly filthy minded friends of mine. So where to begin? Where to end? Shall I start at the end and work backwards or start in the middle and branch out haphazardly? So much indecision here my brothers. Too much indecision. Incapacitated by indecision you might say. How very heavy indeed.

So my brothers. Here I am. Sitting in my small room in france. I have recently returned from what can only be described as a completely Austrian fuck show with two fellow Cobras. None other than Diiiiiiiiiiiiiiillon MCEVOY! and 'I said Phil, Phil, Phil the Drill....' Wow wee. Fun was had I must say. After boarding six different trains and spending 24hrs traveling I arrived in St Anton am Arlberg. Google it. Google map it. So this is a very small Austrian town that is home to many Austrians and many more tourists. Mostly europeans. Swedes, Dutchies, Norway people (Yes Graeme I know it's NORWEGIANS), Germans and of course French, spanish and Slovakian. The story really gets going when I finally arrive at the train station in St Anton to be greeted by our two fellow cobras who I have already named. Straight into the jol. I pre-empted the evening by drinking a few cold Heinekens by myself on the train. Sad some might say. Foresighted I say. Dil and Phil were, of course, smashed at this stage. The surreal situation of walking through a tiny Austrian town on a friday night did not go unnoticed. Wow wee was it a pleasure to see these two gents. Of course, in true weather man style, I brought some much needed snow with me. Back we strolled to Dil's apartment. Now I have met some strange people in my life but nothing quite prepared me for the array of bizarreness that I was greeted by when I entered that small stuff flat. Hell's teeth. The first person I meet as I come walking in is Dil's boss. Basically a Nazi. Those people that tell you that anti semitism is dead in Germany/Austria are lying. There are thousands of closet Nazis. Runnin' around, kickin through the snow. But this china was bald with a big gold ring and Marlboro reds. Now my greek ancestry has given me some very handsome looks but along with that comes beautiful curly hair and a well established nose. To an Austrian you might as well be wearing a sign around your neck that says: Hey! Fuck you. So I didn't really get such a good vibe off him. But neither did Dil. Dil has been struggling for months with this psycho. Those are different stories for a different time.

Down we descend into the windowless world of a gappies apartment. Dil, like few others, has managed to hook himself up with a great job. He's a breakfast chef at a local hotel. He works from 06:30 to 13:30 everyday. Yet still he trooped on. His apartment was free and his expenses were limited to snow boarding gear and dinners. Anyway, I digress. So down the stairs we go. Dil is giving me a good go on the house rules. Snowboard boots outside etc. Washing up. Put on clothes when strolling around the apartment etc. He's become incredibly domesticated that young man has. Very admirable. He's not living in the state of squalor I had imagined. When we get downstairs I meet Reino (Pronounced Rhino). He is a small wispy haired chap with a greying beard. he's at least fifty five but claims to be ten years younger. Not a chance bro. Everyday he strolls around in loose old man vest and denim shorts. These denim shorts come just below the knees. For shoes he dons beige socks in jesus sandals. Helluva vibe. You could imagine him being one of the ous who turned in jews in those small towns. Dil digs him though so we'll give him the benefit of the doubt. "I grew up in Austria." Cool, so did Hitler. Anyway. That's Reino, the quasi landlord of the place who lives above Dil's apartment. Sharing Dil's humble abode are three Slovakian girls and one raging homosexual called Dion from Indonesia. Along way from home he was. Let's start with the more colourful of the four roommates. Dion. Dion, Dion, Dion. What a character. Dion moved to Vienna after some serious drug problems that he had in Bali. You name it, he's done it. It got to the stage (and this is from the horse's mouth) that drug dealers refused to sell him drugs. Drug dealers with consciences, not something I'd heard of before. Ag well anyway. So Dion moved to Vienna and got married. To a man of course. He's been working and living in Austria for a good few years now. His husband actually came to visit us a day or so later. He was a middle aged Austrian man. He wore glasses and I am sure he had a tertiary education behind his name. His name was Johan. He looked like the kind of man who worked as a lecturer, not the estranged husband of a thrity one year old gay indonesian drug addict. Heavy days. Basically Dion told us that the two of them were no longer in love and they could bang anyone they wanted. Jeez. We had quite a few great chats. Later I was to learn that Dion found me quite handsome. Put on the gayest asian accent possible and repeat this sentence after me: Bug is soooo handsome. Quote unquote. said to Dillon Mcevoy two nights after my arrival. The door stayed locked for much of the rest of that trip. Just joking I banged his lights out. Just joking again. Or am I? (Cue strange look from Mugatu to Claud his assistant after giving him a dairy coffee). Weird. Ness. So now we have our final three characters. Th three slovakian girls. You'll remember that Dillon Mcevoy mentioned that he was sharing a flat with three or four Swedes, conjouring images of all night orgies, pink panties and jaw dropping scenes that made you jealous and scared at the same time. Well I can safely say that none of that is going on. It's so far from that. Too far from that from Dil's point of view. Two of the three were not so hot. The one is quite hot but I think she has her eye on Reino. Alas poor Dil. But they were very sweet girls and very accommodating. Monica was especially nice to me. She gave me baked treats and on one occasion bought me an iced tea. She also had a severe addiction to vodka which I won't get into.

So there you have it. i've described the characters and now for the events. Oh there is one more legend to be spoken of. He's a fellow UCT graduate and goes by the name of Raj. Absolute champion. he is going to start work with old Phil in the not too distant future and popped over for a holiday before the proverbial nine to five gets going. So the four musketeers then. Most nights followed the same sort of pattern. By a cheap case of beers then go out and throw ourselves around. Pissing off landlords and boss's in the process. Each day myself and Phil would hit the slopes for some 'epic powder runs bru'. Well I tell you what. The Austrian alps are regarded as the most dangerous avalanche country in the world. Most people, by most I mean everyone else except for me and Phil, carried a little peeps around. A peeps is a device that sends off and electronic signal to alert the authorities to your whereabouts in case you get stuck in an avalanche. For four days Phil and I risked our lives by jumping into the abyss. Nerve wracking at times but awfully exciting. The most eventful excursion had to be crawling under a net (the net was in place to stop people going down a very rocky, steep death slope. We unstrapped our boards and slid down. It entails holding onto rocks and then letting go to slide a few feet and hope to god you are able to stop before you slide over the edge. If you go over the edge it's bye bye baby. Anyway. Phil drops in first and is caught by the thick snow on the edge of the precipice. I hand the snow boards down to him. Which he catches to my immense relief. Then I come down. I let go of the rock too soon making my fall that little bit longer and faster. Phil had to throw himself in front of me to stop what could have been a rather bleak highlight to my trip to Austria. Thanks Phil. Needless to say the mission was worth it and we enjoyed some very delicious untouched snow for a few hours. Everyday continued in this vain. Dil would generally join us after his stint in the kitchen for a few little bunny hops and the odd mid- slope scuffle. Joyous times.

Come Tuesday though my luck ran out. Our final jolling night was to be spent doing some ridiculous taboganing down dimly lit roads on the mountain. AWESOME. We got really smashed before and spent the cable car trip up singing old cobras change room songs. Forty feet above the ground. Definitely the Cobra's most extreme change room session thus far. After some merry making we reached the top and proceeded to fly down hill. I wasn't going to include this but I won. There it is. I did. I pipped Dil and our Australian mate shea at the line. Sorry. It's a fact though. Coincidently the Austrian Olympain taboganist, Claus Rodler, happened to be eating dinner at the restaurant at the finish line when he saw me come flying in. The last four hundred meters or so. In short, he approached me singing my praises. He was having dinner with his agent and mentor, Ulli Stingingleider, at the time. Both said they had never seen such natural talent before. both were on their phones to dignitaries on the Austrian athletics board. They were demanding I be offered a green card asap. However I declined their offer a life time buckworst supply because I swore I would return to South Africa to become my country's first ever winter Olympian. A dream I have had since a very young age. Anyway.

So after all these shenanigans we proceeded down hill. Both literally and figuratively. on the way down we decided to play the fool in little snow field. This entailed big hits and general merry making. in the hullabaloo I lost a show. Oh where oh where has my little left shoe gone? That's a question that still hasn't been answered. We searched for many minutes. Alas she cried! It was gone. Onward I tramped all the way to the night club, barefoot and disconsolate. I was devastated. Anyway, Raj kindly offered me the services of his left Adidas slop. You know the kind with the little bumps and the velcro straps. Everyone knows someone who used to rock those with socks to get-togethers in like standard four or five. I know a few people. Pete Haw maybe? Graeme Steen? Although Graeme Steen is awfully partial top a velcro strap he wouldn't go that far. So our night went in the general direction of most nights. I awoke the next morning to a severe hangover and one less shoe. This was a serious problem as I had to return to france that night and french and swiss train stations aren't exactly conducive to wearing one shoe. Rather dirty. Anyway. So we went and had another look in the field. Still no shoe. Still no luck. To make matters worse I had nought but ten euros to my name, no airtime and no battery on my cellphone. Heavy days. I had to survive 24hrs of train tripping in said state. NOT IDEAL. Not ideal in the slightest. No ways Jose. No money for to buy me food, no money for to phone a friend to pick me up at the end of the line. No phone to receive reassuring messages from my loved ones. Just a half filled iPod and a massive book to keep me company. And keep me company they did. Those were some very long hours my friends. I am glad to say I have returned to Biarritz in one piece but I looked like a complete fool walking through major cities in europe wearing my right shoe and one very white hotel slipper. Rather comical I must say. I had a good laugh at myself. I think most of europe had a good laugh at me too. I was carrying a snowboard so I put on a little limp at times and I think I may have got away with it. Why is that guy wearing a hotel slipper? (Cue limp) Oh, must have hurt it snowboarding. He's cool. Fuck he's cool. You'll see. By tomorrow most of europe will be cruising around in one shoe and one hotel slipper. By stocks in hotel slipper manufacturers. trust me. It's about to go through the roof.

Anyway. So here I am. I've got practice tonight. I've got a smile on my face. I know, that as a Cobra you always take that special spirit with you. I also know that where ever I am in the world there will more than likely be a fellow Cobra to take you in, feed you, bed you and give you that much needed beer.

Until next time dear friends, ALWAYS TAKE THE WEATHER WITH YOU!
