The Cobras will continue their quest for the league cup on the 17th of September against the Spanners in the semi-final of the 2008 competition.

Could the UCT Internal League be the longest contested sporting event ever, ranging from March to the end of September...it is actually getting a little bit ridiculous with all these breaks as we end up playing all year round, starting in summer, playing a game or two in autumn, having a break for the whole of winter then finishing in spring.

There was a poor show at touch yesterday, so let's please make sure we stay fit and keep up the momentum and get down to touch TWICE a week, thats Friday's and Sunday's at 4pm sharp @ Bishops. Fitness is the key...

The Cobras put together another spirited performance to beat the highly rated Easterns side 27-10 in the quater final last night on a beautiful evening up on the Green Mile. It was all Cobras from the word go, as they ran in two quick tries to put Easterns on the back foot from the outset. The Cobras took the momentum gained from beating the Nadoes to producing another display of awesome running rugby, can they be stopped now?

Here is all the information that is needed at this stage of the competition, and it basically sums up the route in which the Cobras will take in order to reach the final for the second year in a row...

As you can see above, we will be playing Easterns in the quaters, with the possibility of facing either the Spanners or the Wild Boys semi's, if we take a look accross to the other side of the draw, i'm sure we can agree that we might have been blessed with an easier run into the finals, not to say that the two matches before then are going to be easy games. This is now the business end of the league with two tough games coming up, we lose, we out...and please let's not be taking part in the 7/8th play off's.

We will be playing against Easterns at 17:30 on Wednesday in the Cup Quater Final of the UCT Internal League 2008. One doesn't need to explain the importance of the fixture...

The weekend that was Bishops...

On friday, the Bishops Od's played against the Bosch Old Boys in a thrilling encounter. It was the Bosch Old Boys who got on the scorecard first with a well worked try. It was a physical battle with both sides not giving each other an inch as there were gang tackles being made, hard running, and sublime finishing. OD's struck back just before half time to make the scores level at 5-5 with Cobras star Brendan Raubenheimer going over after using his soccer skills to dribble the ball into the in goal area.

The second half produced the same sort of Rugby, with both teams well in the game. Hit after hit the defensive was relentless from both teams and what a game of rugby we all had on our hands. The bosch crowd started encouraging their side with a few war cries, adding to the awesome spirit in which the game was played in. There were numerous Cobras and Nadoes in both sides as expected, so the rivalry was as strong as ever. A big thanks to all who came down, the event seems to be getting bigger and bigger with every fixture, and it won't be long until this fixture becomes a highlight on both the Bishops and Bosch sports calendars. Final score Bishops OD's 15 - 5 Bosh Old Boys.

Saturday morning saw the game we had all be waiting for, the second derby match of the season between Rondebosch and Bishops. Bishops won the fist fixture a few weeks ago 20-8, and never looked like losing on Saturday morning. After Rondebosch put points on the board first, it was all Bishops from then on in, with sublime handling of the ball and running rugby that can only be associated to Bishops, it was a field day for the boys. Final score 47-15 to Bishops, it's now 4 years since Rondebosch have beaten Bishops, but the rivalry still remains the same.

Get down to Wadda this Saturday....

Cobras Braai/Piss-up...

There will be a Cobras Braai this Thursday, the 14th, for all Cobras (past,present,future) It will give us an opportunity to celebrate last weeks victory, catch up with the ou's, and start our preperation for the knock out stages of the competition which begins next week!

The Braai will take place at the notorious White House, No.24 Bishoplea Road Claremont. Kick off will be at 5pm...please bring your own beer, a couple if you want to keep it chilled, or at least 12 for yourself, if you, like Army, plan on getting lank hectic and cheating on your girlfriend. We will be supplying the fires, so can you guys please bring enough meat for yourselves. 'Bokke and Tiger afterwards, you never know, stranger things have happened...

The new Greenpoint Stadium has been under construction for many months now, and is looking set to finish on time for the FIFA Soccer World Cup in 2010. It is believed that Cobras Rugby will be moving from Bishops to the new Stadium in 2011 with a contract said to be worth millions.

Test Match weekend...

It is a huge weekend for Cape Tonians this weekend as there will be 3 Test Matches played in one single weekend...

On Friday (15th Aug) is the new tradition that is Bishops OD's vs. Rondebosch Old Boys in only the 4th ever encounter. In 2007 the Bosch old boys beat Bishops OD's in both legs of the fixture, but this changed earlier this year when Bishops held out for a draw against Bosch with the likes of Robbie Fleck gracing the field. It was a match played on a flooded Bishops Range field, where as expected, the ball struggled to do the work with the final score being locked at 5-5. However, this Friday see's the traditional rivals go head to head once again to see who will claim the accolade of being the champions of Old Boys Rugby for 2008. The game is played in an awesome spirit where running rugby is the order of the day, so get down to Rondebosch Rugby A this Friday afternoon to either play or support, it's going to be a good one and what better way to start the derby weekend than a game of rugby, a few beers and a good catchup with our old rivals Rondebosch.

Saturday morning is the much anticipated final derby game of the season and curtain raiser to the Tri-Nations test, as Rondebosch travel accross the road to try and cause a huge upset in both teams last fixture of the 2008 season. Bishops comfortably beat Rondebosch 20-8 in the first fixture which was played infront of a capacity crowd at Rondebosch. The Bishops pavillion is yet to be completed so make sure you get there early as seating might be limited.
Prediction: Bishops by 15

From Bishops many people will be making the 15 minute walk to Newlands where South Africa will be taking on the All Blacks in their first Tri-Nations home fixture of the year. The Bokke are still well in the competition, and if they pull of home victories over New Zealand and Australia, we will be crowned Tri-Nations champions for 2008. It's going to be a crazy atmospheer as the test match was sold out within 2 hours of tickets going on sale 2 months ago.
Prediction: Bokke by 7

So there it is, its going to be one seriously long weekend, with lots of beer being drunk, many a memory being shared, and more importantly lots of rugby being played and watched! Good luck to all involved and let's bring it home Bishops and Bokke.

Cobras Monday Magic Moment...

Cobras take down Nadoes...

The Purple Cobras ran out as underdogs against a powerful Nadoes side which was yet to lose a game since a pool fixture against Ubumbo last year. The Cobras didn't have the best start to the season as the team struggled in the opening stages of the competition to produce rugby which has earned them the accolade of being one of the league's powerhouse side.

This was all to change as a highly motivated and calm Cobras side could possibly have tunred their season around with a historic victory of the 5 time league champions the Nadoes.

The Cobras won the toss and chose to run against a very slight breeze that was sweeping across the chilly green mile. Cobras recieved the kick and from the kick off looked far more composed than the Nadoes, as their backline struggled to produce the magic they have been known for with wild passes being thrown between flyhalf and second centre. The Nadoes have also been known for their powerhouse forwards who often try to bully their oponents, however this was not to be the case on Wednesday night as the young Cobras side didn't give the Nadoes half an inch.

The Cobras spent quality time in the Nadoes half with the forwards making sure that the ball kept going through the phases, but it wasn't long until the Cobras were on the back foot and the Nadoes were pushing for a try. After the ball got knocked out of Nadoes flyhalf Guy Loxtons hand on the Cobras 5m line, the defence ran up past the loose ball and a Nadoe coming through managed to pick the ball up and go over under the poles. 7-0 to the Nadoes.

It wasn't long before the Cobras struck back and after another clean line out ball the forwards trampled all over the Nadoes pack and were brought down just short of the line only for the Cobras scrummy Graeme "I pull tall chicks" Steen to go over untouched, conversion succesful half time 7-7.

The talk at half time was that we were very much in it and if there was an opportunity to take the Nadoes side down, this was it as the motivated Cobras side knew that we were well in the game, if not actually dominating the proceedings. The Nadoes crowd started to sense an upset and started getting rather vocal on the sideline. Penalty on the Nadoes 10m line after about the 15th offence of hands in. The Cobras elected to shoot at poles and flyhalf Warren Butler managed to land the penalty to put the Cobras in the lead with 15 minutes to play, 10-7. This is how the score stayed and the Cobras walked away from the victory unbelievably stoked as the general mood in the camp was that this is what could possibly have turned our season around after struggling in the earlier stages of the competition.

The Cobras pack was hugely influential in this victory as the stole the majority of the Nadoes line out ball and one all of their own throw in's with star lock Dugald McDonald being back from a long injury. It was against Ikhaya in the opening fixture of last years season that he did his knee and hadn't played since. Not only him, but Matthew Kelly too, the Cobras flank, wrote down Wednesday the 6th of August as their comeback date as they couldnt pass up the opportunity to play the Nadoes. It was an unbelievable comeback for the two who have both been out of rugby for months. The Nichol brothers also had huge games along with young Cobras prop Garth "Moeg" Adams and signing of the season Mr. Kyle Rennie. Its hard to mention all the guys who played huge roles at it can be put down to an awesome team performance.

The Cobras will take this momentum into the quaterfinals, and could not have asked to click at a better time.

Chinamen... Wowee it has been s very long, hasn't it? It's been so long in fact that I had forgotten my password for this very blogsite. I was unhappy to see that the protection policy for such a situation is simply to forward your password to your e- mail. Not great if your e- mail pasword is the same for everything else Not great at all. Nonetheless here we are agan for yet another instalment of Bug's weather report. Unfortunately our sponsors have pulled out on me so this is pretty much a solo effort on my behalf with zero reward, other than those sweet smiles on your faces.

Today's show is very special for a number of reasons. Firstly, and most importantly, tomorrow's game is against the Nadoes, bru, and thus I feel it my duty to provide you with something that i both inspiring, humorous and educating at the same time. A difficult job for most people, but then again I am rather awesome. Secondly, today's interview is with a newer memeber of the Cobra's family. A stalwart this season who's put in some big hits and powerful leg drives, which is expected considering the body enhancing supplements he's rather partial to. I speak of nne other than Brendan "Evan Stone" Raubenheimer. I'll give you a quick squiz at a little convo we had over a spring role and guac sub the other day. Both were equally delicious I'll have you know, but with a chicken/ guac sub priced at R19. 50 and a 'largechickennoodlepleaze' at R17, there really is no doubt whichoption one should take. A 'chickenspling' role is roughly R6. I had both, Raubs had the sub. Poor decision I reckon. Anyway. Finally, it is the last time that I write this very prestigious publication as a simple bystander Tomorrow I don the Purple and White to stand amongst my brothers on the luscious Green Mile. Thinking about just gets me hard. Also I met two incredibly hot Swiss twins last night so I'm lank stoked about life. Twins Basil, TWINS!

R: Well two weekends ago I told some chick that I would: "Punch her in the cunt unless he sucked my fat man cock. Last weekend I distinctly remember telling some Stellies chick that I knew she wanted me o gut her and wanted to know why she seemed offended when she had just told me that she was from Stellies. Heres a clip for those of you who enjoy british humour... and those of you who enjoy american humour. It is also funny, if like me you enjoy both british and american comedy. However, you will still find it funny whether you get the 'British', 'dry' vibe or rather you understnand the 'American', 'slapstick' vibe... in another event you may enjoy the 'combination' of both vibes. Essentially either way, basically you should enjoy it. Unless u are 'simple'. with that said the degree of 'funniness' may vary given your current state of mind. i know i was in a superb state of mental concioussness when i 'enjoyed' this clip. i was high. And i enjoyed it. i recommend this. it is enjoyable.

Great. Now that thats out of the way, basically the clip is of Russell Brand (he is currently playing a leading role in the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall, fairly decent flick, He has also claimed to have 'bedded' over 1000 women) interviewing the mythical Will Ferrell (Ron Burgundy, and also staring in an upcoming movie called Step Brothers, with John C Reilly, which looks to be an absolute cracker-jacker of a huge chuckle)... anyways as stated previously, prior to this paragraph, you must watch it. It starts of rather slow and random, but sit tight, and hole your horses, as it soon escalates into something of true beauty. The part where Brand and Will act out a bank scenario is priceless.

So call up TheCaptain, ask him if he's keen for a 'tweak'. He will say yes. And then enjoy this little bit of ad lid comedy together.

Weatherman Bug

Every where you go...

Ahoy there my fine friends. How long has it been since our last time together? I'll tell you, too long. Exams and holidays have wrought a great divide in the Cobras camp and I just have no idea what my fellow brethren are up to.

Currently I sit, laptop on lap, staring out to sea at a very calm and peaceful Jeffreys Bay. Chronic times if you get my vibe. While at my house things are certainly rather chilled I cannot say the same for the rest of this town. If I were, in fact, to describe this place to you in one word it would be: HEAVY.

This place is the heaviest place on earth. No jokes. I went out to the local vibe last Friday, Sovereigns, and was blown away by what I saw there. Picture this. The first floor, yes there are numerous floors, is covered with slot machines. At those slot machines sit the most decrepid and unfortunate souls I have ever encountered. We're talking 40- 60, fat MOUSTACHES, balding hair and thick, ugly tats. And those were the women. Ithankyou. Also lining the walls were the photos of old Springboks. Not legend ones, kak ones. Like Andre Vos and players of such calibre. I overheard one patron ask the bar lady/ thing for one TSALAMARI and TSITS. Calamari and chips essentially. At this point I could not handle it any longer as I had far too much of Waz B's finest and simply burst out laughing. No one thought this amusing though. Let's go up a level shall we....

Second floor is where the jol happens. I'm talking heavy rave with a strobe light that will ensure a epileptic if you're in there for more than ten minutes. Gruesome. I might add that there were some very toit 18 year olds running amok but I was having a hard enough time coming to grips with my surroundings to be worried about throwing in the proverbial spade. Oh, and there was this old oke who was so pissed that he could not walk. I am not fucking around but when the oke tried to move from the bar he simply just stood, waving his arms wildly to find something to balance on. Like I said, HEAVY.

Let's go up another level. Level 3. C'est bizarre mes amis. This place had posters f four wheelers and off road tracks with the odd poster of Ghapi the siffest Afrikaans singer everto exist. If I knew how to post pictures I would cos this shit is hectic Anyway there were a couple of pool tables thrown in for good measure with the muck chick behind the bar insisting that we be very careful, and how experienced were we. I could not believe my ears, this bird should have given me the pool cue and a blow job because they need all the business they can get. Also and more importantly there were some very heavy tunes being blasted out on this level. Why play the same tunes as the rest of the club when you can separate them and play worse music? That place should be imploded.

I've just come up with a better one word descripton for that place. TAPPED. Those people, that place and that vibe were extremely TAPPED.

So there you have. My JBAY experience thus far. Good times I must say. I'll catch you cats for a bit of 'nadoes, bru.

That very very kak time of year is upon us once again; Exam time. Grafting and stressing for 2 weeks, its got to suck. At least there is plenty to look forward to; a solid 6 week break which includes the highly anticipated and highly awesome, annual Cobras and Nadoes tour up to Plett. Last year this went down like a cold brewksi in the changerooms after a Cobras victory, i.e. very well.

It is with great anticipation and a huge bulge in my pants that I bring you the latest update of Bug's weather report. Brought to you by, you guessed it, st st st Steinhoff international and FNB. Weather that rocks my brothers from some other mothers.

How is everyone? Good? Good. Used that before I know, still a good line i must say. So it's a blustery Tuesday night, I've just had my fill of Ugly Betty and now the creative juices are flowing. However, I did notice last week that when I stuffed up the weather prediction I got given beers left, right and centre. Something inside me says that perhaps getting the weather report wrong 'ain't such a bad idea.

Tomorrow's game against the Ubumbo is set to be an absolute humdinger. What is making this affair even more intriguing is the fact that no one knows whether or not ian Armstrong will be back from some land locked African nation. From where? Exactly. I don't think anyone had a clue he was leaving. perhaps he went to the masai mara to get special training, or more appropriately , the Swahili people. get it, cos his nickname is Swali. So like it all makes sense. Good fun. The game should be epic.

Today i'm going to give you two predictions. The first obviously will be the weather and the second will be on the game itself. This is a new development for the "show", it will be a show, one day. Sigh.

Anyways. My prediction for the game is simple: Cobras by five. not going to give you the score. Just know that when you boys are five points ahead you can stop playing and relax, assured in the knowledge that I predicted it to end that way. (Don't do that- seriously)

Now let's get down to business. I recently had the pleasure of catching up with a one Graeme Steen over a few brutal fruits. At the time he was wearing an ever so sexual leopard print suit, which did in fact have pockets, to my utter amazement. Well done Precilla.

B: So Graeme, howsit? Ironic that I chat to you before the big game against Ubumbo, you always said it was your favourite game.

G: I'm good buddy. Well it is a helluva coincidence that we are chatting at such atime but I think IRONIC is the wrong word. You see, the Oxford dictionary describes IRONY as:
"The expression of meaning through the use of language signifying the opposite, typically for humorous effect."

B: Oh, I see. How foolish of me. I see those pockets are a lot bigger than they look.

G: Indeed.

B: Not to bring up a touchy subject Gimli, but I heard that you were recently retrenched/ made redundant/ let go/ made obsolete/ fired? Care to elaborate?

G: Ya Bug, you know there are no hard feelings between me and Sheraton Linen, it was just time for us to part ways. I've learned valuable lessons that will help me further my career later on in life.

B: Nice to see you're taking it so well. So does that mean that your boyfreind Dean aka Stefan Terblanche aka Deon from voice alert is now the sole bread winner in the nest?

G: I'm afraid so Bug. It's funny, it was an development in technology that lead to my being fired but it was the same development in technology that has made Deon, sorry, Dean so successful in selling alarm systems.

B: Ironic

G: Now you're getting it my boy.

B: Thanks, reminds me of that story in matric, Rukwind, you know the one?

G: I do, helluva story. Vragmotors and shit. Sorry, en kak.

The Bishops 1st team of 2008 is going from strength to strength after coming off a huge victory against Boland Landbou two weeks ago they went into the game against SACS knowing that they will definitely pose more of a danger, as we all know every southern suberb school raises their game by about 80% when they come up against Bishops.

However, this didn't matter, as Bishops went on to beat SACS with relative ease winning the game 40-27. It was another display of awesome running rugby, you guys must really get down and watch these guys play as they do play traditional Bishops rugby that no other school is able to produce.

And the Blue's go marching on....

Test Match fever...

Tomorrow night sees The Cobras take on Ubumbo in an all important Round 2 clash. It is our first game of the season where we believe we will be tested physically and mentally, so it is important that we get into the right frame of mind for the fixture. There has been far too much frustration of late, let's turn this around and start to remember why we formed this side in the first place, to have a fuck load of fun. So let's start enjoying it and playing the type of rugby the Cobras have been renowned for.

We have developed a rather fierce rivalry with Ubumbo with every single one of our games against them being played at a frantic pace with huge tackles and hard physical forward play. Let us take note to the fact that we have never lost to Ubumbo, so let's go out there and keep the record straight tomorrow night.

Cobas star outside back and almost bald, Warren 'Oupa' Kelly, the oldest member of the Cobras family has signalled his intentions for this Wednesday Nights clash against Ubumbo. The Cobras will be looking for inspiration from this man, who was missed last week and is almost untouchable when he gets the ball. He is definitely a player to watch this Wednesday and his experience will be influential when out on the dim mile, let's jump and jive.

A blast from the past...

Here is the league website write up about the Cobras vs. Ubumbo semifinal from last year, this game has been dubbed by many people as the best Cobras performance to date...can we repeat this type of magic on Wednesday night?

As if the crowds had not been treated to enough already then came the semi final that would cap the evening brilliantly. Ubumbo and Cobras drew 12-12 in the Pool stages and were amped to set the record straight. Unfortunately the long wait for the kick off was taxing on the teams and more so on Ubumbo in their new tight fit Reflex Nutrition sponsored white strip, (just a question: if we eat 'tomorrows nutrition today', what will we eat tomorrow?) as Cobras scored two important tries in the first 15 minutes.Up 12-3 the Cobras were looking dangerous. The pinpoint accuracy of their kicking kept the heavy Ubumbo forwards stranded in their own 22m and the loss of inspirational captain and pressure relieving flyhalf Skud Mateza to concussion crippled Ubumbo.

The Cobras prodded through a deft attacking kick the bounce right back into the hands of flying burly prop Craig Smith as he reached the goalline but a feat of super human strength from the Ubumban right winger lifted the massive prop clear off his feet and drove him back into the field of play. The trystopping effort sparked an Ubumbo resurgence.Speedy fullback Khwezi finished a sick touchline effort to scored under the poles with a rocket man dive that would have impressed Joe Rokocoko to even it up 12-10 at halftime.

The second half was a repeat of the first with neither side yeilding an inch of territory or a minute of possession without a fight. The deadlock looked unbreakable with the Cobras holding on by 2 but not even remotely keen to play defensive rugby. They went wide with everything and their faultless skills allowed them to do it with purpose.

Eventually their width gave them a linebreak far out wide that got moved back in to an unknown supporting runner who threw the crispest contact offload as two defenders merged onto him to put a runner away under the poles. 19-10.Ubumbo didn't come to be beaten and came back to score an excellent try in the corner that couldn't be converted, but that was the ball game. 19-15.
